Every time I watch this commercial now, I am brought back to my childhood. More specifically; the cartoons I use to watch after school or on Saturday mornings. This commercial brings back so many great memories from the 80’s, I’ve always assumed that this commercial is from the 80’s. Not until I posted this commercial on YouTube, and put in the comments that it was from the 80’s, did someone correct me, letting me know that it was from the 70’s. Doesn’t matter to me, it will always trigger happy cartoon watching from the 80’s to me.
Something I’ve always known, but by doing this blog, is that the jingles from older commercials are so much better then the jingles of today. The jingle from this commercial is classic, and watching it then and even today, you will be singing it hours later. That is the mark of a great commercial, if you can remember it hours later, humming, singing or whatever, the jingle, you will want that treat. I think I’ll watch the commercial one more time and then go off and find myself some Tootsie Roll. I can already taste them!
This is one of my favorite commercials from the 1980’s. The computer, the cloths, the hair (remember the feathered hair from back then?), and the jingle, transports me right back. This commercial is pre 1987, because back in 1976, all the red candies were taken out because of a scare with the dye that was used to make them red. Also you’ll notice they have the Tan colors. If you look for tan today, you’ll notice they are gone. Why? Replaced them with Blue. Never understood why they had brown and tan. I always use to sort them out by color and I always ate the brown and tan one first; to plain.
Another thing to check out is the M&M’s break dancing. Cracks me up.
I do believe this is the first in a line of commercials that you see the M&M’s chocolate centers, diving into and swimming around in a chocolate pool before getting out and hitting the showers to get their colorful shells. I don’t know why, but I always loved that part.
Watch the video and tell me what things you see in there that exemplify the 80’s?
Some people call this the most annoying commercial of the 80’s. Some, like me, thought it was neither good nor bad when I first saw it. And a few, mostly adults I’m sure, thought it was wonderful. Yes, the Encyclopedia Britannica commercial. This kid had a report due on space and used Encyclopedia Britannica to chalk it full of information that he only got a B+, all because he found SOOOOO much information, he overloaded it. Very Corny.
But watching it now, it brings me back to being in late elementary school and I distinctly remember, quietly I might add, that it would be cool to get those encyclopedias. I loved learning about space, and would take any opportunity to look at a book or even an encyclopedia to read up about different planets and stars. Looking back, this commercial was kinda corny, but it holds a special place in the 80’s section of my heart.
If you are a kid from the 80’s, you know all about this candy, that looks like gum, but didn’t quite work to well. Bonkers is a candy that came in packs that looked like gum, was soft and chewy, but you didn’t keep chewing. They came in combo flavors, like strawberry and banana, and watermelon and lemon, and things like that. The problem was, it tasted just like gum, buy you wanted to keep chewing and chewing, but it didn’t have any gum base and wouldn’t last, because it wasn’t gum! The commercials were better than the candy. You see the actor pop a piece of it in their mouth, and what ever flavor they ate, that piece of fruit came down and “Bonked” them. Very 80’s feel to it. If I remember correctly, I hated this commercial when I was younger, but now, it’s all retro and cooler.
Is there anyone who played Little League Baseball in the 80’s and not pack your mouth full of bubble gum? We use to put so much gum in our mouths trying to emulate our favorite big leaguers and their tobacco filled mouths. I remember a black gum that if you put enough in, when you spit, it was black just like tobacco chewing/spitting big leagues. But that’s a story for another day. The ultimate gum to chew was Big League Chew. Not because it tasted good, it was ok, but because of the pouch it came in. Looked like a real chewing tobacco pouch. And when you opened it up, the gum was all shredded, like tobacco. Made us all feel like we were in the big leagues.
I honestly don’t remember this commercial. I remember the product, but not this, or any other commercial. If that is the case, why review this commercial? I remember some time ago, or at least I think I do, someone asking for this commercial. Whoever you were, I can’t find your email, but if you are [...]
When ad agencies create adds, their goal is to make a commercial that is catchy and memorable. The use of jingles is to keep it in your head and remind you of the product. You really don’t see this art too much anymore, and when you do, the products are usually annoying. But back in [...]
In advertising, you have to hook the customer and give them something to remember and hook that to you product, all in 30 seconds or less. Commercials that do this can be remembered for a long time! Time to Make the Donuts, Mikey Likes It, Oscar Mayer Balogna to name a few. What they all [...]
Such a simple commercial, yet it brings so much pleasure to so many people. This is the Hershey Kiss Christmas commercial where the Kisses play in bell-choir fashion “We Wish you a Merry Christmas.” This commercial has been around since either the late 80s or early 90s. I’m not sure exactly when, but it feels like [...]
Ah, it’s Christmas time once again and that means wonderful Christmas Commercials! Maybe it’s me, but it seems like Christmas Commercials today just don’t have the same effect as they did back in the 80s. Then again, I was a kid back then, so Christmas in general had a different meaning. Back then it was [...]
